Hello. My name's Luke Ryan.
I write words.

You may have heard of words – they're all around us. In fact, you're reading words right now! But words needn't be scary or confronting. They can be fun, like the word phlebotomist. Or pretty, like the word phlebotomist.

Over the years I have written words for a number of reputable organisations, including The Vine, the Guardian, Smith Journal, Crikey, The Age, MIFF, the Melbourne Festival and many more. I'm yet to have been fired or taken to court, so I presume I'm doing OK. You can find some samples of my work here.

I have just released my first book, a comic memoir entitled 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Chemo', about having had cancer at 11 and 22. It's out now through Affirm Press. The book is based on my 2009 Melbourne International Comedy Festival show Luke's Got Cancer and is funnier than it sounds. These days I also spend my time working with a sketch comedy outfit called The Lords of Luxury, who have a podcast series you should totally download.

The Book

The Book

I have written a book. It's a comic memoir about cancer and family and growing up sick and dating while bald and partying on chemo and freezing my sperm and a whole lot more. You can read the Introduction here, or if you're the adventurous type you can buy it right now on Kindle, iOS, Kobo or glorious hard copy.

"Roaringly, gut-achingly funny. Who knew a book about having the life slowly drained out of you could be so utterly life-affirming?"
– Benjamin Law

The Speaker

The Speaker

If you’d like to hear the sound of my voice, I am available to speak at schools, libraries, corporate functions or really any event with a microphone and audience.

I assure you, I tell a hellishly good story about getting cancer. If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I'm with the Booked Out agency – you can check out my profile here."
